Sanctions and Educational Outcomes
Sanctions are the outcomes assigned when a student is found responsible for violating university policy. At NMSU, sanctions are designed to be educational, not just punitive. Our goal is to help students learn from their choices, repair harm when possible, and continue moving forward in the community. Most cases result in low-level outcomes such as warnings, meetings, or educational activities—not suspension or dismissal.
We consider each case individually. This includes looking at mitigating factors (such as taking responsibility or having no prior history) and aggravating factors (such as repeated behavior, safety concerns, or impact on others). This helps ensure that outcomes are fair, appropriate, and aligned with what the student needs to learn from the situation.
Below is a general overview of the types of sanctions we may assign. Please note that sanctions are determined on a case by case basis, and the examples used below are just a few of the things that a conduct officer can assign:
-
Warning: A written notice that a policy was violated, along with expectations moving forward.
-
Educational Workshops/Classes: Such as “Under the Influence” for alcohol violations.
-
Reflection or Development Assignments: Short writing tasks or activities to encourage reflection.
-
Meetings or Advising Sessions: Follow-up conversations with a staff member.
Used when behavior has greater impact, involves risk, or shows a pattern.
-
Conduct Probation: A formal period in which further violations may result in more serious consequences and the student is not in "good standing" with the university.
-
Parental/Guardian Notification (when permitted): For certain alcohol or drug violations involving students under 21.
-
Loss of Privileges: Restrictions related to housing, campus events, or organizations when relevant.
Reserved for serious misconduct involving safety, violence, or significant impact on the community, or for students who have a significant repeated pattern of behavior that inhibits their or others' success at the university.
-
Housing Removal: Relocation or removal from campus housing when behavior makes the environment unsafe.
-
Suspension: Temporary removal from the university with the opportunity to return later.
-
Dismissal: Permanent separation from the university, used only for the most serious incidents.
